Can a stripped thread be repaired, or does the part need replacing?
Usually it can be repaired. Depending on the damage we recut the thread, fit a Helicoil insert, or cut a new thread to suit, and the original component goes back into service.
Can you repair a thread without taking the part off the machine?
Often, yes. Threads in frames, mountings and fixed equipment can be repaired in place by the mobile crew. If the part needs bench work, bring it to the workshop at 43 Zendeling St.
What is a Helicoil insert?
A coiled wire insert fitted into a drilled and tapped hole. It gives a stripped hole a new thread at the original size, and in soft metals like aluminium it often wears better than the thread it replaces.
